Many of you will be aware of our involvement with the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) which works to improve the health and well being of mountain porters IPPG is responsible for staffing a rescue post run by Community Action Nepal at Machermo at 4400 m in the Gokyo Valley of Nepal. The post provides free medical aid to porters and locals and medical care to trekkers and climbers who are charged to fund the care of the locals. The rescue post will be moving to new purpose built facilities which include a porter shelter for the Autumn 2006 season. We desperately need a doctor or doctors to help staff the post for the Autumn 2006 season. I hope to be out for most of the autumn season but at least one second doctor is needed.

The Gokyo Valley is notorious for altitude illness and there is the potential to gain a great deal of experience of this and remote environment medicine as well as the added bonus of working with the porters and local people. It is a fantastic opportunity, great fun and would provide superb experience for anyone with or working towards the Diploma (and you could work on all your reflective essays too!). The post is fully equipped with medical equipment; an O2 concentrator; solar power and comfortable living facilities (for Nepal!) and we have very good relationships with the HRA.

If people are interested in going out for part (at least a month) or all of the autumn season or would like further information contact Nick.
