In May 2007, the biannual symposium of the International Society for Skiing Safety (ISSS) will be held in the Scottish Highland village of Aviemore, set in the heart of the breathtaking Cairngorm National Park. This meeting is the world's leading forum for research into the causes and prevention of snow sports accidents and injuries. Research topics include injury epidemiology and case reports, treatment of snow sports injuries, new equipment design and testing (for example bindings and ski construction), evaluation of protective equipment (such as helmets and wrist guards), injury prevention campaigns and the role of (for example) ski /snowboard instruction, ski area factors (ski patrolling, piste preparation and design) and a host of other topics.
Membership of the ISSS includes ski patrollers and ski area doctors, physiotherapists, engineers, orthopaedic surgeons, ski and snowboard manufacturers, ski area management, ski injury lawyers, and physiotherapists. Anyone with a vested interest in making these popular sports as safe as possible would also find the conference of great value.
The ISSS is especially keen to encourage students and new researchers to present their findings at these meetings, which are famous for their friendliness and inclusive social programmes. We are delighted that, for the first time, Scotland has been chosen to play host to this symposium. Aviemore is the perfect location - centred in some of the most spectacular scenery Scotland has to offer and yet with convenient travel connections to the cities of Inverness, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. The venue for the conference is the Hilton Coylumbridge Hotel, just on the outskirts of Aviemore. The hotel is well regarded for its friendliness and its great location in the heart of the stunning scenery of Badenoch and Strathspey.
The Cairngorm National Park area has an enviable range of activities with something for everyone. Take your pick from walking, climbing, golf, fishing, birdwatching, cycling, husky dog rides, sailing, clay pigeon shooting, gliding, quad biking etc! The list is endless. Unlike some ski resorts in Europe, Aviemore is open for visitors every day all year round.
May is a beautiful time to visit Scotland - the sun usually shines, the days are pleasantly mild and the spring flowers are stunning. So don't just come for the conference, come for the holiday of a lifetime. And bring your family and friends. In common with previous ISSS meetings, a full and active optional social programme is being planned both for delegates and accompanying persons. Whilst delegates are attending the conference, we'll take good care of you! On Wednesday, 16th May, a full day excursion is planned taking in Inverness - Capital of the Highlands, Loch Ness (including a cruise and a visit to the Monster exhibition and time in the village of Drumnadrochit) and more.
This website is still in the process of being developed. New pages and features will be added as the conference draws nearer. You will be able to register, submit abstracts and pay conference fees online. In the meantime, please feel free to contact the organising committee by email via our contact page.
We look forward to welcoming you to Aviemore and Scotland in May 2007!
